What could be a nicer gift than to do a family portrait, when everyone is together for the holidays. Diena McNabb of Texas did that for her family, asking us to come in to her parents' home, Sheila and Chip Anderson, in Inver Grove Heights to photograph everyone both in a posed formal portrait and photojournalism style. She and husband Dave have two beautiful children, Devin, age 2, and her little brother Braden, age 1. Deina's brother Todd was also there. When we came in, the children were a little wary of us with our big tripod and cameras and lights, but after a while with their parents and grandparents around they felt safe and loosened up and let us photograph them playing and interacting. We got quite a few nice candid portraits as well as this larger group portrait, and captured a little of the fun, love and intimacy between everyone. Grandfather Chip took Devin outside to spread corn for the wild turkeys in their backyard, which produced some nice moments. We try to be speak softly and stay relaxed at family sessions with children, especially since the children's natural instinct is to be suspicious of strangers. But after a while, seeing their parents relaxed, they relax too. It gains their trust and then they ignore us, and when that happens, we can capture some of the magic of a family together. Thank you Deina, Dave, Chip, Sheila and Todd for being such wonderful clients. We hope we were able to create images that you will cherish for many years to come.
